Certificates of insurance & DOT/FMCSA filings, handled for you

We issue certificates of insurance, commonly called COIs, for general contractors, customers and landlords. We can also add additional insureds when required and permitted by the policy.

For motor carriers that need operating authority, we handle DOT/FMCSA insurance filings such as BMC-91 and BMC-91X. FMCSA requires the appropriate filing before operating authority can be granted. Review the FMCSA insurance filing requirements.

A missing COI or filing can hold up a job or delay operating authority. Our agency handles these requests in-house so you have a local contact when paperwork is needed.

What commercial auto insurance covers

Commercial auto policies can combine several types of protection. The coverage available to you will depend on the vehicles, drivers, business use and policy terms.

Liability

Liability coverage can respond when an insured driver causes bodily injury or property damage to someone else.

Physical damage

Collision coverage can help with damage caused by a covered collision. Comprehensive coverage can help with covered losses such as theft, vandalism, fire or certain weather events.

PIP and medical payments

Personal injury protection or medical-payments coverage may help with eligible injury-related expenses after an accident. The coverage that applies depends on the vehicle, policy and applicable Florida requirements.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage can help when an at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance, subject to the policy’s terms and selections.

Hired and non-owned auto

Hired and non-owned auto insurance can provide liability protection when a business uses rented or borrowed vehicles or when employees use their own cars for work. It is liability coverage and does not replace physical-damage coverage for vehicles the business owns.

Coverage for trucks

Truck operators may also need motor truck cargo, trailer interchange, non-trucking liability or bobtail coverage. The right combination depends on what you haul, whose authority you operate under and the terms of your contracts.

Truck insurance in Jacksonville: box trucks, semis and owner-operators

Truck insurance needs vary according to vehicle size, cargo, operating radius and whether the business operates under its own authority.

Box trucks and delivery vans

We help delivery businesses and box-truck operators compare coverage for local and longer-distance routes. Tell us what you carry, where the vehicle is garaged and how far it normally travels.

Dump trucks and contractors hauling equipment

Dump trucks and contractor vehicles may require coverage that reflects their weight, equipment, jobsite use and hauling activity. Required limits may also be set by contracts or government rules.

Owner-operators

An owner-operator leased to a motor carrier may have different responsibilities from one operating under independent authority. We will review how you operate and identify the coverage and filings that may apply.

Florida & federal insurance requirements for commercial vehicles

Florida’s minimum combined bodily-injury and property-damage liability requirements for certain commercial motor vehicles are based on gross vehicle weight:

  • 26,000–34,999 pounds: $50,000
  • 35,000–43,999 pounds: $100,000
  • 44,000 pounds or more: $300,000

Vehicles subject to 49 CFR Part 387 must meet the applicable federal minimums. See Florida Statute §627.7415.

Federal minimums for interstate for-hire property carriers include:

  • Under 10,001 pounds GVWR: $300,000
  • 10,001 pounds GVWR or more: $750,000
  • Hazardous materials: $1 million to $5 million, depending on the material and operation

Review 49 CFR Part 387.

Motor carriers that need operating authority must have the appropriate insurance filing, such as BMC-91 or BMC-91X, submitted before FMCSA grants that authority. See the FMCSA filing requirements.

Requirements depend on your vehicle, cargo and where you operate. We’ll confirm yours when we quote.

FAQ

How much commercial auto insurance is required in Florida?

Florida requirements depend on the vehicle’s weight and whether federal rules apply. Florida Statute §627.7415 requires combined limits of $50,000 for 26,000–34,999 pounds, $100,000 for 35,000–43,999 pounds and $300,000 for 44,000 pounds or more; vehicles governed by 49 CFR Part 387 must meet the applicable federal minimums. Review the Florida statute at https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2026/627.7415 and 49 CFR Part 387 at https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-387.

Do I need a DOT or FMCSA insurance filing for my truck?

You need an FMCSA insurance filing when your operation requires federal operating authority. The correct filing and limit depend on your authority, vehicle, cargo and operation, and authority is not granted until the required filing is accepted. FMCSA explains the filing requirements at https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/insurance-filing-requirements, and we handle DOT/FMCSA filings for our clients.

Do box trucks need commercial auto insurance in Florida?

Yes, a box truck used for business generally needs coverage appropriate for its commercial use. The coverage and limits depend on the truck’s weight, cargo, operating radius, contracts and whether state or federal rules apply.

Does my personal auto policy cover my work truck?

A personal auto policy may not cover a vehicle used primarily for business because personal policies typically limit or exclude certain business uses. Check your policy before relying on it for a work truck, and ask an agent to review how the vehicle is titled and used.

What is hired and non-owned auto insurance, and do I need it?

Hired and non-owned auto insurance provides liability coverage when a business uses rented or borrowed vehicles or employees’ personal cars for work. You may need it if your business does not own every vehicle used for company activities. It does not replace coverage for vehicles the business owns.

Are my employees covered when they drive their own cars for work?

Hired and non-owned auto coverage can provide liability protection for the business when employees use their own cars for work. It does not cover damage to the employee’s vehicle itself, and the employee’s personal policy remains important.

Can you quote Progressive and GEICO commercial auto?

Yes, we compare 5 commercial carriers, including Progressive and GEICO. This allows us to review available coverage options side by side instead of providing a quote from only one carrier. Request a quote or call (904) 929-2930.

What do I need to get a commercial auto quote?

You need basic business, vehicle and driver information. Have your FEIN, vehicle details and VINs, driver information, operating radius, cargo, USDOT or MC number, current policy, loss runs and any contractually required limits ready.

How fast can I get a commercial truck insurance quote?

We provide quotes within 4 business hours, Mon to Fri 9 AM to 5 PM ET. The timeframe applies to a quote response, not a guarantee that coverage will be approved or bound within that period.

Can you issue certificates of insurance (COIs) for my contracts?

Yes, we issue certificates of insurance for customers, general contractors and landlords. We can also add additional insureds when requested and permitted by the policy.

Do you insure businesses outside Jacksonville?

Yes, we serve businesses in every Florida county. Coastal Insurance Advisors is based in Jacksonville Beach and works with businesses throughout the state.
